Sunkissed and glowing with health after her holiday in Mustique, the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, was elegant in a white coat from Max Mara on Thursday. Her latest style winner – chosen for a maritime engagement in Portsmouth – was originally priced at £580 but is now on sale for £345.

Kate is set to give birth in April

The Max Mara Studio Villar coat, which is available on the House of Fraser website, does not appear to be from a maternity range. Unlike her first pregnancy when the Duchess wore regular clothes right up until the end, this time Kate has largely stuck to specialist maternity labels such as Seraphine and Madderson London. However, the belted coat flattered her blossoming figure beautifully, showing off her bump, which appears to have grown quite a bit and skimming her legs.

The young mother later took it off to reveal a red and black shift dress with a playful sailboat print from the Somerset by Temperley range, which sells at John Lewis.

She had accessorised with a navy clutch and delicate drop earrings.

Interestingly, Princess Eugenie wore the same coat at Christmas. The outfit was a lovely bright choice for a crisp winter morning and set off the tan she picked up during her mother Carole Middleton’s Caribbean birthday celebrations. Bravely given the colour of her coat, Kate helped put the finishing touches to a mural painted by local children.

Thursday's visit was to support the 1851 Trust, which aims to interest young people in sailing. It has been launched by Sir Ben Ainslie alongside his bid to win the America's Cup for Britain. Despite being just two months away from giving birth, Kate is still looking spritely and wearing towering court shoes. Her second child with Prince William is expected in mid-April. As with Prince George, the couple have chosen not to find out the sex of the new baby. The future King told President Obama he was so excited about the birth last time around that he forgot to ask the sex of the baby.
