As the 68th Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday evening, the leading ladies of the big screen brought their best glamour and glitz to the red carpet. Oscar winners Lupita Nyong'o and Natalie Portman were leading the way with bright gowns, while models Karlie Kloss and Doutzen Kroes were all white on the night.

Lancôme ambassador Lupita wore a stunning vivid jade-green Gucci dress with a plunging neckline and floral applique on the shoulders, accessorising with Chopard jewels. Her skirt was pleated and as she walked the red carpet on the French riviera, she couldn't help but spin in the dress like a princess.

Natalie, who will debut as a film director during 2015's festival, wore a simple Dior red gown with a sweetheart neckline. The streamlined gown was accessorised with glittering drop earrings and a chunky bangle from de Grosogono.

The world's top supermodels also all descended into the town for the opening gala, which saw the premiere of French actress Catherine Deneuve's Standing Tall.

Both Karlie and Doutzen wore risque pale gowns, with Doutzen's Versace dress featuring a thigh-high split and a diagonal cut through the dress. Doutzen was also wearing Chopard.

Cannes juror Sienna Miller meanwhile walked the red carpet with her fellow jury members. It is the 33-year-old's first time at the international festival, and she showed off her slender figure in a sleek Lanvin royal blue gown with bow detailing and a bright fuschia lip.

Sienna's fiance Tom Sturridge has so far stayed away the event, so instead she mingled with her fellow jurors including Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal and director Xavier Dolan.

It comes as no surprise that Sienna has already made quite the impression at the festival with her style. The Alfie star looked completely at ease as she arrived at the festival on Wednesday. Looking as radiant as ever, the 33-year-old embodied the glamour which is associated with the glitzy event, dazzling in a Balenciaga day dress.
