HELLO!'s Oscars best-dressed list

It's the most glitzy, glamorous event in the showbiz calendar, and the stars of the silver screen made sure to pull out all the stops for the Oscars 2017. The leading ladies stepped out onto the iconic red carpet in Los Angeles wearing stunning designer dresses and equally glam accessories.

Emma Stone was a vision in fringed Givenchy Haute Couture and Tiffany & Co jewels to collect her Best Actress Award for La La Land, while Karlie Kloss rocked an elegant Stella McCartney caped back column dress. Former Miss USA Olivia Culpo, meanwhile, turned heads in a dramatic tasselled dress from Marchesa.

Fifty Shades Darker star Dakota Johnson pulled out all the stops for her Oscars red carpet appearance – and it’s earned her a spot on our best-dressed list.

"Dakota got to play the Gucci trump card and it paid off,” says Jill. “On anyone else this could have been eek not chic but, with Dakota’s pared-back hair and make-up, it was perfection.

“Designer Alessandra Michele threw every detail at this dress: puff shoulders, high neck, pleating and a giant bow and Dakota topped it off with a matching Gucci clutch and Cartier jewellery. More is more? On this occasion, yes please!”

We rarely see Alicia Vikander in anything but Louis Vuitton – and for good reason! The star presented an award looking stunning in the French fashion house’s creation.

 “Sticking to the flamenco vibe, Alicia’s dramatic black lace dress had a rise and fall hemline paired with ankle strappy sandals, relaxed up do and a Bulgari diamond necklace. Glamour with an edge – nailed,” says Jill of Alicia’s look.

It was all eyes on young actress Hailee Steinfeld as she lit up the red carpet in Ralph & Russo. “Hailee took on the dress straight off the Paris runway and mastered it beautifully,” says Jill.

 “The star wore the delicate confection of sheer frills and florals with Neil Lane gems, matching metallic lilac nails and confidently slicked-back hair to show off the high neckline. She proved she’s most certainly coming of age in the style stakes.”

Emma Roberts put an emphasis on environmentally friendly fashion for her Oscars appearance. “Emma chose a two-tone vintage Armani Privé gown in collaboration with the Red Carpet Green Dress initiative,” says Jill.

“To modernize the archive piece (a sartorial nod to her aunt Julia’s 2001 look dubbed the ‘skunk dress’), she wore her strawberry blonde waves with a striking red lip and Atelier Swarovski jewels.”

We loved Ruth Negga’s unique Oscars look! “She’s out latest style crush, and Ruth predictably wore a very non-traditional Oscar dress,” says Jill. “The actress chose not to flash any flesh but instead to shine in this scarlet modest high neck, long-sleeved Valentine Haute Couture dress.

 “She topped it off with custom-made Irene Neuwith for Gemfields jewellery set with ethically sourved Mozambican rubies and an ACLU supporting ribbon, showing she’s the thinking woman’s style icon.”

We were delighted to see Olivia Culpo, one of our favourite HFM cover stars, grace the red carpet. “Olivia was another guest to choose dramatic fringing – this time in Marchesa. She had teamed up with the designer and non-profit Water.org in support of their clean drinking water campaign.

 “The dress, inspired by cascading water, was worn with a sleek, blunt low pony tail and contrasting black nails, clutch and delicate velvet ribbon belt. Olivia oozed confidence and did her bit for a very good cause at the same time.”

Karlie Kloss was another guest showing support for the American Civil Liberties Union with a blue ribbon quirkily pinned to her hip. But it was her stunning outfit that got tongues wagging. “Karlie was the picture of elegance in this Stella McCartney caped back column dress,” says Jill.

 “The finger waves and Nirav Modi choker added a glamour injection to a no frills dress – job done!”

Another star to take on white was Naomie Harris, who stunned in Calvin Klein. “Naomie championed sports luxe for her red rug moment and we totally approve,” says Jill.

 “With her very own take on high low fashion, the sequined cutaway Calvin dress was cocktail length at the front with a long train at the back. Worn with hue de jour yellow and mis-matched sandals, it was a playful take on fashion.”

Felicity Jones had her very own princess moment at the Oscars this year. “Felicity looked part sugar plum fairy, part Strictly, but in a good way,” says Jill.

 “The oyster Christian Dior Couture dress would have looked frumpy on anyone else but on our English rose, it was quite charming. The ballroom gold sandals and bare neckline were a welcome touch – Felicity was most definitely wearing the dress and not the other way round.”

It was the biggest night of Emma Stone’s life – and she made sure to pull out all the sartorial stops. “Emma chose fringed Givenchy Haute Couture and Tiffany & Co jewels,” says Jill.

 “Scooping her Best Actress Award for La La Land demanded a show stopping dress and this hit the mark. The bead-encrusted body and gentle swaying fringing was made for dancing and boy, we bet she did!”
