Click here to send this news item to a friend Eddie Murphy and his wife of 12 years have decided to go their separate ways. Former model Nicole Murphy has filed for divorce at the Los Angeles Superior Court citing "irreconcilable differences". The couple issued a statement at the weekend saying they would be putting all their energies into making the break-up as easy as possible for their five children. "The welfare of our children is our main concern and their best interest is our first priority," they affirmed.

The pair did not give any further details about the exact reasons for their split, however. News that their marriage was coming to an end came as a surprise to many of their Hollywood peers, who have seen their union survive Eddie's fluctuating career fortunes and the notorious 1997 incident in which he was stopped by police with a transsexual prostitute in his car.

Nicole first met Eddie in the late Eighties when, fresh from his enormous success on the TV show Saturday Night Live, he had become a top box office draw with flicks like Coming To America and Beverly Hills Cop. The former catwalk queen has hired celebrity divorce lawyer Neal Hersh, who has represented the likes of Brad Pitt and Kim Basinger, to handle her case.
