Hermione calls on card recipients to turn Christmas wishes into forests

Her character in Spooks is not averse to using force as a means of persuasion. In real life Hermione Norris was armed with nothing more threatening than a garden spade and her brightest smile as she launched a Christmas card recycling scheme this week.

Wearing a scarf decorated with cards, the actress planted a British hawthorn as a symbol of the 15,000 trees she hopes will be created through a Woodland Trust initiative supported by the recycling campaign.

She called on the public to drop their used cards at collection points in high street stores such as WH Smith and Marks & Spencer. Money raised from recycling the cards will go towards planting new forests.

"Sending Christmas cards is a lovely tradition, and in the UK we send a massive one billion each year," said mum-of-two Hermione.

"Instead of throwing them away, I'm encouraging everyone to take their cards into participating stores and pop them in the special bins provided," she explains. "This will enable the Woodland Trust to plant thousands more trees."
