Brad and Ang in movie star mode as Critics kick off award season

While they're almost as well known these days for being the parents of six as they are for their screen careers, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were very much in movie star mode this week as they attended the latest Hollywood pre-Oscars award ceremony.

Angelina - a vision in an elegant Grecian-style gown - and her partner were just two of the big names at the Critics' Choice Awards in Santa Monica. Fellow guests included British beauty Kate Beckinsale, Milk actor Josh Brolin, and Secret Life Of Bees star Dakota Fanning.

It was the second awards bash this week for the 14-year-old, whose natural poise and easy manner reveal she's becoming something of a red carpet pro.

Winners on the night included Rachel Getting Married star Anne Hathaway, who shared the best actress gong with Meryl Streep, Sean Penn - voted best actor - and the late Heath Ledger, recognised as best support.

Indie flick Slumdog Millionaire garnered further 'best picture' Oscar buzz, too, after picking up five trophies. Among them best writer, best director and best young actor – collected by the movie's rising British star Dev Patel.

"We had no idea it was going to burst out into America like it has. It was a tiny little film, with subtitles, with no stars, not much of a budget, who could have predicted it?" mused writer Simon Beaufoy.
