After seven seasons playing tough counter terrorist agent Jack Bauer in 24, Kiefer Sutherland could be forgiven for wanting to tackle something a little less heavy duty once in a while. His new project, voicing animated children's movie Monsters Vs Aliens, was just the ticket it seems.

"It was a real breath of fresh air for me," says Kiefer, who was in London this week to launch the movie with his co-star Reese Witherspoon. "We spend most of our time on 24 being unbelievably serious."

The Toronto-raised actor said he had a lot of fun voicing his role as General WR Munger, a military man who finally finds a use for his collection of detained monsters when aliens begin storming earth. Reese meanwhile lends her vocal talents to Susan Murphy, a bride who becomes 49ft 11ins tall after being coated with outer-space gunk on her wedding day.

Talk at the premiere inevitably turned to reports that 24 is coming to an end. "Absolutely not," responded Kiefer. "We're totally committed to making an eighth series."
