There can be little doubt who the man of the moment was at this year's MTV movie awards in LA. The night belonged to British actor Robert Pattinson who picked up three of the night's trophies including the best breakthrough male performance gong for his role as vampire Edward Cullen in Twilight.

Shia LaBeouf also handed teen heart-throb Robert and his co-star Cam Gigandet the best fight award for their tussle in the 2008-released saga. And it wasn’t long before the 23-year-old was back on stage accepting the gong recognising his breakthrough in the industry.

Later in the evening he and his love interest in the film, 19-year-old Kristen Stewart - named best female performer - teased the crowd by just stopping short of re-enacting their on-screen smooch as they accepted the award for best on screen kiss.

Rob was not the only pinup being honoured at Sunday's ceremony.  High School Musical's Zac Efron picked up the award for best male performance, while his co-star Ashley Tisdale took home the female breakthrough performance trophy.

Canadian funnyman Jim Carrey was deemed to have turned in the best comedic performance for Yes Man, while Heath Ledger won a posthumous award for Dark Knight. Twilight was named best movie.

Kiefer Sutherland, the star of 24, and 21-year-old Zac helped Zoolander star Ben Stiller celebrate winning this year's MTV Generation Award, which he picked up in front of A-listers including The Proposal co-stars Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, Forest Whitaker and Cameron Diaz.

Meanwhile fellow Brit Sacha Baron Cohen made headlines when he descended - dressed as an angel in wings and a thong in the guise of his gay Austrian character Bruno - into the lap of rapper Eminem. As the musician gave the impression of taking umbrage and left, Sacha had everyone's attention as he read out Zac's win.
