They have been together since 1980 and by his own admission Ryan O'Neal's frequent marriage proposals to Farrah Fawcett became something of a private joke between the couple. But now the Love Story actor has confirmed he is to finally wed his long-term companion.
"I've asked her to marry me again, and she's agreed," the 68-year-old dad-of-four revealed on a US TV show this week."We will as soon as she can say yes."
Speaking of his terminally ill partner, who returned to an LA hospital two weeks ago in her continued battle with cancer, he added, with a smile: "Maybe we can just nod her head."
And this time around, he is definately not joking. Spurred on to commit officially to the Charlie's Angels star, with whom he has a son, 24-year-old Redmond, Ryan cemented his decision saying: "I promise you, we will. Absolutely."
In the face of the 62-year-old actress' ongoing fight with the disease – she was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and recently chronicled her illness in a recently aired documentary, Farrah's Story – it seems that, importantly, the couple's sense of humour remains very much intact.
When asked about possible attire he may wear to his nuptials, Ryan, who has been a constant presence throughout the actress' ill-health, quipped that he plans to dress "like a gigolo".
"A little thin moustache and slicked back hair. I don't know. We have fun, we tease about that," he added.
