Fans of the Bridget Jones' s Diary movies were thrilled this week by the announcement a third film is the early stages of development. But if Renee Zellweger is to return as the hapless British singleton, she's got a fair bit of weight to gain.
Leaving an LA salon this week, the blonde actress was pictured looking toned and slender - and with a flat midriff that would turn her Chardonnay-drinking character green with envy.
The 40-year-old star gained two stone for the first two films, shedding the weight afterwards. She later admitted that she had worries about her health. "I had a panic attack with all the specialists talking about how bad this is for you long term, putting on that much weight in short periods of time," she said.
But when asked in 2007 about whether she would be up for reprising the role, Renee said yes.
It's not yet known whether the American star will definitely be stepping back into Bridget's huge pants. Working Title, the company behind it, said: "Things are at a very early stage… Renee Zellweger would be the natural choice to play the role."
The first two films were adapted from author Helen Fielding's successful novels about the character, but no third book has been written.
According to film bible Variety, the new script will be based on fictional columns Helen Fielding wrote in 2005 and 2006 for The Independent. They described publishing executive Bridget's quest to have a baby in her 40s.
