Series five has given the over-50s plenty or romantic intrigue. In episode 5 Isobel Crawley was still considering Lord Merton's suit while Dame Maggie's ever character the Dowager Countess did what she does best – meddling.
Dame Maggie also had other matters that required her attention when she found out that the 'farmer's daughter' Lady Edith had taken an interest in was in fact her own illegitimate baby. Edith faced an agonising decision when her grandmother ordered her to send the child away from Grantham.
Meanwhile, the police are still sniffing around Mr and Mrs Bates, convinced one or both had something to do with the death of the valet Green.
