Matthew McConaughey made his breakthrough in 1993 in the acclaimed Dazed and Confused - from which Matthew's catchphrase of 'Alright, Alright, Alright' comes from.

Dazed and Confused was his first film role after working for a year or two in commercials, and in 1996 he himself had won critical acclaim in the legal drama A Time To Kill.

The film was nominated for a Golden Globe and Matthew won the MTV Movie Awards Best Breakthrough Performance, and in the following years Matthew starred in various successful romcoms.

The Wedding Planner, How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, and Fools Gold were all box office hits, but by 2009 the 45-year-old decided to take a break from acting as he realised that "my lifestyle, living on the beach, running with my shirt off, doing romantic comedies" had typecast him.

2011 and 2012 began what became known as the McConnaissance, a period of time where the actor starred exclusively in well-received films including award winners Mud and Magic Mike.

He then went on to star in the HBO hit series True Detective, with Woody Harrelson, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award, and has worked with Christopher Nolan on the space epic Interstellar, out in the UK on 7 November.

In 2006 Matthew met Camilla Alves, and the pair welcomed their first child, son Levi, in 2008. Their daughter Vida was born in 2010, and their youngest, son Livingston, was born in 2012. The couple married in a private ceremony in 2012, which they shared exclusively with HELLO!
