ITV have confirmed that Downton Abbey will return for a sixth series. On Thursday the channel announced that the globally successful and multi award-winning period drama will begin filming a new season next year.
"It is fantastic that Downton continues to be such a phenomenon - still the most popular drama on ITV in its fifth series - and we are thrilled to have commissioned a sixth series," said Director of Drama Commissioning Steve November. "We don't know yet what Julian [Fellowes] has planned, but we are looking forward to working with him, the fantastic cast and Carnival again and have no doubt series six will be unmissable."
The programme's official Twitter account was keen to make the news known as well, posting: "Friends, #TeamServants have such wonderful news to share with you all! #Downton," along with a photo collage of the characters and the message "We are delighted to announce a sixth season of Downton Abbey."
British fans of the show are currently anticipating how the fifth season will end on Sunday night when the finale airs on UK televisions. A Christmas special will then be shown on Christmas Day.
Stateside, however, viewers will have to wait for the season start on PBS on 4 January 2014.
