SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED STRANGER THINGS SERIES ONE
As every Stranger Things fan knows, Barb's untimely death while trapped in the Upside Down was one of the most unfair and tragic things to happen in the first season of the sci-fi show. However, many eagle-eyed fans were delighted to discover that Barb actress Shannon Purser set to return in a brand new Netflix show, Riverdale.
The star tweeted a snap of herself in her new role, writing: "Ready to meet Ethel Muggs? Check out Riverdale tomorrow night!!!" and fans were quick to discuss the exciting news. One wrote: "May or may not be watching Riverdale just for @shannonpurser #Barb," while another added: "BARB LIVES ON IN RIVERDALE (as Ethel)." Others made jokes regarding the nature of Barb's departure from the popular sci-fi show, with one tweeting: "So Riverdale is the new Upside Down?"
Despite having very little screentime, Shannon's role as Nancy's unfortunate friend Barb, who wound up trapped in a parallel world, was embraced on social media, with many fans outraged when her death received little attention from the other characters on the show. Speaking about season two, the show's co-creator Matt Duffer assured that there will be "justice for Barb", telling IGN: "We'll make sure there's some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn't seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening."
He continued: "We're just not spending any screen time on it. It’s not like her parents are like, 'Oh Barb left. She died!' Season One actually takes place over the course of six or seven days—it’s a really short period of time. So part of what we want to do with hypothetical Season 2 is to explore the repercussions of everything that happened." The trailer for the second series of the show was released in February, and shows snippets of what to expect in the upcoming show, which will be released over Halloween this year.
