Awards season is officially in full swing. Following on the heels of the Golden Globes and the announcement of this year's Oscars nominations, the Critics' Choice Awards kicked off on Thursday evening. The belle of the ball was Cate Blanchett, who scooped the Best Actress award for Blue Jasmine. The win comes after the Australian-born actress took home a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress on Thursday.

Looking a million miles from her New York socialite character in the film, Cate, 44, looked stunning in a floor-length flowing gown cinched in at the waist by a statement belt and black patent stilettos. Subtle make-up with a pop of red lipstick completed the winning look, accompanied by her sleek blonde locks. Another winning lady of the evening was Lupita Nyong'o who won herself a standing ovation as well as a gong for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years a Slave. Looking beautiful in a figure-hugging white floor-length gown, the Kenyan actress was visibly stunned by the honour.

"Thank you. I'm a little terrified," she said. 'I'm so honoured to be here and I just want to thank the BFCA for this incredible honour. "Lupita said she was delighted to even be in a category with such big names – she beat the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Scarlett Johansson, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence. She took a moment to remember her late uncle in her touching an tearful speech: "I'd like to dedicate this to my uncle who came to see me in every play and said, 'You're good. But let's see what Hollywood thinks of you.' He didn't live to see this day but I'm sure he's proud of me."

Best Actress in a Comedy went to Amy Adams for American Hustle while Sandra Bullock was named Best Actress in an Action Movie for Gravity. Matthew McConaughey is also on a role. Having won a Golden Globe for Dallas Buyers Club and being named an Oscar nominee, he also scooped the Best Actor award on Thursday night and is clearly enjoying the moment. He said: "Yeah! Alright, alright, alright! Thank you, this is fun."

Jared Leto took home the award for Best Supporting Actor (Dallas Buyers Club) and Leonardo DiCaprio was named Best Actor in a Comedy for Wolf Of Wall Street.
