The cult series centred around the goings on in a small town in the wake of the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer, played by Sheryl Lee

Though no offical announcement has been made concerning casting, it is understood that many of the original actors and actresses will be involved, with Kyle MacLachlan reprising his lead role as Special Agent Dale Cooper. The American actor, best known for his roles in cult films, as well as his appearance as Trey MacDougal in Sex and the City and Orson Hodge in Desperate Housewives, took to Twitter just hours after the revival was announced.

David Lynch and Mark Frost will write and produce nine new episodes, which will be a continuation rather than a reboot

"Better fire up that percolator and find my black suit :-) #Twinpeaks," he tweeted. Twin Peaks was set in a strange town in which high school homecoming queen Laura Palmer – played by Sheryl Lee – had been murdered. In the original finale, the ghost of Laura Palmer famously said: "I will see you again in 25 years". In 2016, when the new series will be broadcast, it will be 25 years since the second season ended.
