Julianne Moore has had an extraordinary week. Hours after being named as an Oscar nominee for her leading role in Still Alice, the 54-year-old star emerged triumphant in the Best Actress category at the Critics' Choice Awards. Julianne – also a winner at Sunday's Golden Globes – was clearly delighted as she arrived on stage to accept her trophy.

"One thing I know is that I'm a girl's girl," she said in her speech, before addressing her fellow nominees, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Rosamund Pike and Felicity Jones. "I am so inspired by you all and just honoured to be in your company."

Birdman was flying high on the night.

Michael Keaton was crowned Best Actor for his star turn in the black comedy, which received seven awards in total. But it was Boyhood that walked away with the top prize for Best Picture.

Ellar Coltrane won the award for Best Young Actor for his lead role in the movie, which he spent 12 years of his life sporadically filming.

American Sniper star Bradley Cooper, who was performing on Broadway on the night, was named Best Actor in an Action Movie, with Emily Blunt his female counterpart for Edge of Tomorrow. As she accepted her trophy, the British star was surprised on stage by her proud husband John Krasinski, who ran on to give her a big hug. "He's presenting next," smiling Emily explained to the crowd. Following on from their Golden Globe success, Patricia Arquette and Whiplash's JK Simmons were named best supporting actress and actor.

The best director category was a closely fought competition, but in the end Boyhood's Richard Linklater took home the coveted trophy, beating the likes of Angelina Jolie for Unbroken, Wes Anderson for The Grand Budapest Hotel and Alejandro G Inarritu for Birdman
