Eddie Redmayne's winning streak continued at the star-studded SAG Awards on Sunday evening. The British actor collected another award for his trophy cabinet for his transformative role in The Theory of Everything. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO Eddie, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the film just a fortnight ago, saw off competition from Steve Carell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Keaton to take home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

"To Stephen and Jane back in Cambridge, thank you for letting someone who gave up science at 14 years old into your orbit," the star said as he accepted his trophy from Julia Roberts. Eddie was flying solo on the night, revealing that his new wife Hannah had had to go back to her job as a financial publicist. "She's not here because she does do a proper job," he told People on the red carpet. "We had our honeymoon over Christmas and then we came to LA for the Golden Globes, and she was like, 'I think I should probably go and show my face at work'."

Nevertheless, he was in good company at the awards, where he was joined by his Theory of Everything co-star Felicity Jones. The British actress was up against Jennifer Aniston, Rosamund Pike, Reese Witherspoon and Julianne Moore in the Outstanding Performance by a Female actor in a Leading Role category. And it was Golden Globe winner Julianne who walked away with the prize. The SAG Awards brought together Hollywood's elite to celebrate the very best of the big and small screens. Stars who picked up awards for the film roles also included Boyhood's Patricia Arquette, J.K Simmons for Whiplash and the cast of Birdman – including Naomi Watts, Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton – who took home the big prize for cast in a motion picture.

In the TV world, a celebration of complex female performances granted Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder) and Uzo Aduba (Orange in the New Black) the lead and supporting statues. Viola thanked Shonda Rhimes, the show's creator, for "thinking that a sexualized, messy, mysterious woman could be a 49-year-old dark-skinned African-American who looks like me". Meanwhile, Uzo tearfully accepted her honour by graciously thanking her cast mates and disclosing the fact that she had vowed to quit trying to be an actress the day she was cast in the standout role of "Crazy Eyes". The entire Orange cast was further recognised for ensemble performance in a comedy.

Beloved British drama Downton Abbey snagged the statue for Ensemble in a Drama, while the night's other big winners were Kevin Spacey, Frances McDormand, Mark Ruffalo and William H. Macy.
