It's the biggest night in British music and this year's BRIT awards will feature the hottest pop stars in the world right now, from Taylor Swift and Sam Smith, to Kanye West and Ed Sheeran. The annual awards show regularly gives viewers surprise winners and incredible performances, and 2015 will be no different, with Madonna's first performance at the show in 20 years, and Take That taking to the stage for the first time as a trio.

The show has been running since 1977, and in that time has gone through many different incarnations. We take a look back at the show, and reveal 10 things about Wednesday's ceremony...

The show has been hosted by various celebrities throughout the years - from the disastrous duo of Mick Fleetwood and Samantha Fox, to Russell Brand in 2007 - but in 2015 Ant and Dec return to the show for the first time since 2001.

The two revealed that "it just felt kind of right to do it this time", after being asked numerous times over the years.

Another performer who returns for the first time in years at Wednesday's ceremony is Madonna, who last performed in 1995. The 56-year-old announced the news over social media, and is expected to put on a performance that showcases her new album, Rebel Heart.

Pop crooner Sam Smith will be hoping to take home a few statues, as he finds himself leading the Brit Awards nominations with five nods. His success comes a year after he took home the Critics Choice Award, which this year goes to James Bay.

Taylor Swift finds herself up against Beyoncé in the International Female Solo Artist category - and will be hoping that Kanye West, who is a last minute performer - stays far away from the stage, as the outspoken rapper caused controversy at the 2009 MTV awards by storming the stage while Taylor was receiving an award.
