Caitlyn Jenner's reality TV show has been cancelled. The 66-year-old confirmed on Twitter that I Am Cait, which chronicles the star's life following her gender transition, won't be coming back for a third series.

"After 2 amazing seasons of @IAmCait, it's time for the next adventure," she wrote. "Thank you E! & thank you to the best girlfriends I could ask for!"

In a statement, E! said: "We are incredibly proud of the two seasons of I Am Cait, a ground-breaking docu-series that sparked an important and unprecedented global conversation about transgender people, their struggles and triumphs.

"Caitlyn and E! have mutually decided not to move forward with another season at this time. She will always remain a part of the E! family, and we look forward to continue following her journey as she appears on Keeping Up With The Kardashians."

The star confirmed the news on Twitter

I Am Cait launched last year with 2.7 million viewers, and won Outstanding Reality Program at the 2016 GLAAD media, but ratings fell in season two, with the lowest rated episode bringing in 480,000 viewers.

Caitlyn already has another exciting project in the pipeline, however. As well as her appearances on KUWTK, she will star in the third series of Amazon's Transparent, which tells the story of a Los Angeles family and their lives after they discover that their father Mort (Jeffrey Tambor) is transgender.

In an interview with the Associated Press at the GLAAD Media Awards in April, the show's creator Jill Soloway said Caitlyn's decision to join was a "dream come true".

"We are all part of the same community," she added. "A lot of the transwomen who work on our show are also in her show, I Am Cait."

Caitlyn – who previously won the decathlon in the 1976 Olympic Games as Bruce Jenner - is seen as the highest-profile American to come out as transgender.

In a fan question and answer session on her blog last year, she was asked what had given her the courage to come out.

She is set to star in Amazon's hit series Transparent

"I had all of my diversions, sports… this… that… married… family," she replied. "But after 65 years, here I was right back with the same problems that I had when I was 10-years-old and I had to finally do something about that.

"It's been both eye-opening and difficult to see first-hand what so many members of the transgender community have had to go through just to be themselves."
