Simon Cowell has responded to the rumours that Zayn Malik is producing a new TV show loosely based on his former band One Direction. Simon, who takes credit for catapulting the boys to fame, said he feels he should have been approached by Zayn.

"Nothing surprises me anymore," the music mogul told Entertainment Tonight. "I think he should have come to me with it, if I'm being honest with you.

"I do actually believe that when they've got these ideas, bearing in mind where we started, they should actually come to me."

Simon Cowell signed One Direction in 2011

One Direction signed with Simon's record label Syco Records shortly after finishing third in The X Factor in 2010. The group are currently on a hiatus, following Zayn's departure from the band in March last year.

Since his exit Zayn, 23, and Simon, 56, have locked horns on more than one occasion. Earlier this year the TV star famously told Yahoo: "I'm not interested in a single word he says, but I am interested in what he sings."

Zayn, 23, left the band last year

Zayn is believed to be developing a new TV series with NBC entitled Boys, which follows the formation of a hugely successful boy band and the trials and tribulations that come with being one of the most famous pop stars on Earth.

The Pillowtalk singer, who will be working with producer Dick Wolf, told Variety: "Dick Wolf is a legend and the opportunity to work with him and NBC to create a compelling drama series is awesome."

Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment, said: "Zayn certainly brings an authentic point of view to this world where kids are catapulted into fame at a dizzying speed."
