LucasFilm has confirmed that they have no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher's iconic character of Princess Leia in any future Star Wars films.

Following the star's tragic death in December, fans of the Sci-Fi franchise have been speculating whether there were plans to digitally recreate Princess Leia, especially as the franchise digitally recreated actor Peter Cushing, who died in 1994, in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, LucasFilm released a statement in response to the reports, saying: "We don't normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumour circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher's performance as Princess or General Leia Organa. Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honour everything she gave to Star Wars."

Carrie's character Princess Leia will not be digitally recreated

Some fans have praised the decision, with one writing: "No digital Leia would be the right call, seeing a virtual version of Fisher on screen in episode 9 would be too soon." Another added: "I'm happy they won't recreate Carrie Fisher as Leia in the next film. I just hope they don't just write her off. Make it beautiful." However, others expressed concern about the importance of giving the iconic character the ending she deserves. "I'm actually fine with a digital Leia if it helps finish her story in a fitting way," one tweeted. "I'd prefer digital over recasting," another added. The star will be appearing in Star Wars: Episode VIII in 2017 as she had reportedly completed filming for the upcoming film before her death.
