Warning! Do not read if you haven't seen Sherlock series four

Amanda Abbington has hinted that she could return to series five of the hit BBC show Sherlockdespite her character Mary dying in the first episode of series four.

The actress revealed that Andrew Scott, who plays Jim Moriarty in the show, gave her valuable advice about her character's future. "He said to me, 'you never leave,'" she told Radio 1 DJ Greg James. "You never really leave Sherlock. And it's true, because they always do flashbacks and stuff like that. So I'm hoping that at some point Mary will come back and do something else." She also opened up about the show's decision to kill off her character. "It was a good run, and I love the fact that they killed her off," she revealed. "Because she had to die anyway, because they killed her in the books, and I quite liked the dramatic-ness of it. It was good. It was quite Bond-esque, and it felt quite dark and mysterious, and she takes a bullet, she's like a hero."

Amanda hinted that she may return to the show

However, she joked that her two children - Joe, ten and Grace, eight - were less than impressed by the plotline. She said: "My kids watched it and just wept, they were so devastated. And they couldn't believe it, and I said, 'Look I'm here, I'm here, mummy's acting.' But they couldn't – they were like, 'Mummy's dead!'"

Amanda opened up about acting with her ex-partner, Martin Freeman

The actress starred in the show opposite her ex-partner Martin Freeman, and has previously spoken about acting as husband and wife onscreen following their split, telling Sunday Telegraph's Stella magazine: "Yes, [it was] so weird. Especially playing new parents again, up all night feeding and things, because we were effectively revisiting how it was when we first got together. Martin and I remain best friends and love each other, and it was entirely amicable, but we realised we'd come to the end of our time together. It is sad and upsetting, because you think you're going to be with someone forever, but you either do that or you break up. And we both came to the decision that splitting was best for us. We've been really lucky to make it such a clean break, especially for the kids."
