HER EARLY LIFE

"We all knew from the beginning there was something about Grace" - Mum Margaret Kelly, from Princess Grace: A Biography, 1976

Grace Patricia Kelly came into the world on November 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Descended from Irish and German immigrants, she was the daughter of a former fashion model mum and a bricklayer dad who became a millionaire as a building contractor. The young beauty attended private schools before going on to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts following her 1947 high school graduation.

The aspiring star made her professional acting debut in the play The Torch Bearers, written by her Pulitzer-prize winning uncle George Kelly. After a brief stint on Broadway, Grace appeared in a number of TV dramas and then relocated to Tinseltown to pursue a film career.
