Silent Witness star Emilia Fox decided to ring the changes at a recent phone launch with hair dyed red from her usual blonde and big, bouncy curls that couldn't be more at odds with her usually sleek style. It's a surprisingly easy look to achieve, using one of two techniques.
Start by applying volumising mousse before blowdrying hair. Then work in large sections, with a spritz of setting lotion or styling spray, winding hair around either large-barrelled tongs or large heated rollers, twisting as you go to create the corkscrew effect. Work from the ends up and finish winding about a third of the way away from the roots.
Leave hair for a few seconds to take on the form of the curl around tongs or pin rollers into place above the ears. Either way, leave to cool and unwind gently. Then shake and rake through with fingers, pushing hair upwards at the front to create lift at the top to balance the width at the sides before spritzing with hairspray. Coat fingers with hairspray, too, and while still wet, separate out thin sections around the front to create texture and a variety of shapes within the curls.
With such statement-making hair, keep make-up neutral to let the hair speak for itself. The only colour you could get away with is maybe a slick of red lipstick – but make sure it's exactly the right shade for your complexion so it doesn't detract from a fabulous style.
