Renee bucks trends at Golden Globes

The actress' casual curls defy sleek theme of award ceremony

At the Golden Globes the majority of stars opted for pared down, smooth and often straight hairstyles to go with their sleekly silhouetted dresses. Except for Renee Zellweger, who stood out with an updo dressed into a froth of curls.

Renee decided to buck the solid, all-over colour trend, too, by varying the tones within her hair using delicate highlights. And of course she put her crowning glory in the hands of the best, with a visit to top NYC hairdresser Paul Labrecque, whose A-list of fellow celebrity clients has included Hilary Swank, Helen Mirren and Naomi Watts.

Renee popped to Paul's home in the Hamptons for her colour, where she enjoyed his skills in the kitchen as well with a tint brush – he prepared a poached salmon and lentil salad for his figure-conscious guest while they sipped champagne.

"I used three shades of blonde highlights in Renee's hair - one pale blonde, one golden, and one dark," says Paul. He placed the shades in chunky panels so they looked as if Renee's hair was catching the light, concentrating the bulk of the palest color around her face. "I trimmed all her damaged ends while cutting in a side-swept fringe so she could grow out her hair with style," he continues.

Making the most of her longer hair, on the night, Renee had her hair separated into one-inch sections and twisted round heated curling tongs, which were then pinned against the scalp and left to cool.

Once the whole head had been curled, each section was lightly fingered through to keep the curls separate and defined, with a few gently backcombed with a wide-toothed comb for root lift.

Sections were then pulled back and turned back on themselves at the ends before gripping into place to form a loose bun at the crown. A quick spritz of hairspray is vital to prevent the curls 'deflating' on the night.
