It's all height on the night

Oscar stars go for slick, sleek success

What a difference an awards night makes. At the Brits, gong winners and guests went for glam hair worn in cascades of voluminous waves around the shoulders. Change the setting from music to the movies, however, and the trend becomes more elegant and almost restrained with many stars at the Oscars sweeping their hair back in the simplest of styles. Beyonce went for a smooth, slicked back look with hair tied at the nape. Penelope Cruz's style was similarly tied back, with her new fringe dressed into a side parting. And where hair that was dressed up at the Brits went for height at the crown – a la Duffy's 60s-inspired style – the height at the Oscars was kept to the front, with almost quiff-like styles that looked quite Grecian. Best actress Kate Winslet and fellow nominee Meryl Streep were joined by Natalie Portman, Sharon Stone, Tilda Swinton, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Angelina Jolie and Evan Rachel Wood in opting for this flattering shape.
