Milla's parting of the waves

The new style position: centre forward? Milla Jovovich showcased a mixture of hair trends at the Chanel ready-to-wear show in Paris. She wore her hair backcombed at the crown for Sixties-inspired height and tied back with micro-bands – both popular with celebrities. And her style also included a heads-up as to what's been happening on the catwalks: the centre parting.

Pringle, Christopher Kane and Sonia Rykiel all favoured centre parted hair. But beware, it may seem like the most innocent of fashion-forward looks, yet it can be one of the most severe. It draws attention to irregular features, particularly prominent noses and even chins as it draws the eye right down the face from the crown.

And it can accentuate wide or round faces.

There are not many of us who can carry off a centre parting, particularly if hair isn't particularly thick. Luxuriant hair can add a little necessary height to soften the severity of the line.

If you do want to try it out and aren't blessed with the features of a teenage model, wear hair forward onto the face so it hides the sides - and therefore slims the face. It's more flattering, especially if you style it so there's lots of texture and body which draws the eye outwards, counterbalancing the vertical line of the parting.
