Power cuts are back with Michelle’s style-savvy bob

Michelle Obama’s brand-new bob has breathed life into a classic cut. The strong outline and precise lines make it popular with women who want to look strong and confident
Michelle Obama has cemented her credentials as one of the most naturally stylish women on the international political stage with her new hairstyle – the Power Bob, as it’s been called by one of Britain’s best hairdressers, Errol Douglas.

"The balance and shape are just perfect," Errol says. "The bob is one of the most flattering haircuts ever developed – which is why it’s so eternally popular – and on Michelle it lifts her whole look, making her neck look longer and more elegant.

"It’s instantly updated everything about Michelle’s appearance so she looks more modern – and a lot younger, too."

Errol reckons Michelle has nailed the perfect cut for her looks and position with the new Power Bob.

"Previous styles have been too heavy and long, which has swamped her face. And she’s always gone for lots of body or height, which can make the face look bigger or longer.

"This sleek, short cut emphasises her features rather than her face, but with enough shape still to flatter. And because it’s been graduated at the back – layered into the nape to build up the weight – it’ll look great from any angle, which is important when you’re being constantly photographed."

Michelle’s hair has been chemically straightened to allow the cut to take shape around her head and Errol says she’ll need to use a lot of serum as she’s blowdrying, both to help prevent hair drying out and to give it essential shine – such a flat, sleek shape can look otherwise dull.

"She also needs to use lots of high-shine hairspray; Afro hair looks best when the surface is really glossy. It helps lift the skin tone, too."

Errol reckons Michelle’s latest style choice is proof that the bob isn’t going anywhere soon, despite having been popular again for the past three years. "You only have to look at the catwalks to see it’s been given a new lease of life, with really sharp, sleek outlines, updated with severe fringes. There’s a lot more life left in this look yet."
