Kate debuted a new shorter hairstyle at the Golden Globes

"I cut my hair! I was ready to cut my hair off," she explained during an appearance on Live! with Kelly and Michael. "Why not? It'll grow back."

Kate admitted that she thinks "boys are worse than girls" when it comes to going for a spontaneous chop – but added that this isn’t necessarily the case with her four brothers.

"I actually think boys are worse than girls when it comes to haircuts," she said. "Except my brothers who all need haircuts and for some reason don't get them."

She joked: "They just don't know how to groom themselves."

Kate teased fans with a video of David Babaii cutting her locks

Fans had been expecting to see the star rocking a new 'do at the Golden Globes, as the star teased her 3.4 million Instagram followers with a still from a Snapchat video of her stylist David Babaii giving her hair a trim.

"Check out the trailer for my new film The Cut on Snapchat: Khudsnap," she quipped in the caption.

Although at the time it was only a trim, David has since revealed that the next day, as Kate was getting ready to go to the awards ceremony, she decided to "just go for it" and get her hair chopped into a much shorter style.

The actress previously had tresses that fell below her shoulders

"I cut off all of her hair!” David told People. "We cut off seven inches, I measured it. It’s a really modern, jagged, crazy kind of cut."

It wasn't just the length that Kate agreed to change - David revealed that colourist Cassondra Kaeding also "made her go blonder" for the red carpet, in a nod to a look which he described as "Kate Hudson circa 2005".
