Serena Williams has marked the beginning of the Miami Open with a dramatic new makeover. The 34-year-old surprised her fans when she revealed she has dyed her trademark black tresses into bold ombré green hues.

The tennis champion took to Instagram to debut her new look with her 2.9 million followers, showing off her edgy beauty credentials in a striking selfie which showed off the varying shades of green. In the caption, she quipped that she was encouraged to go for the eye-catching new look by by fellow tennis players Genie Bouchard and Christina McHale.

"For Genie and Chrissie. U asked for it. Lol," she captioned a gorgeous selfie in which she beams as she flaunts her new 'do.

It seems that Serena has been keen to experiment with her look in recent weeks. Although it seems she has opted for extensions to add some length to her new green style, ahead of the Oscars afterparty the star had her locks chopped into a sleek shoulder-length bob, also showing off the striking style on Instagram. "Time for a change," she simply captioned a selfie.

No doubt when the star opted to get her hair dyed green she was making the most of some rare downtime ahead of the tournament in South Florida, where she is currently the three-time defending champion.

In an open letter published in the New York Times, Serena explained that, while she has played in competitions around the world, she always feels like the Miami Open is her "home".

"This is a tournament that I've grown up coming to," she wrote. "It's been just so great for tennis for decades. I feel like this is my home here, I feel like I play well here, I feel like things click for me here."

She added: "It's always a good stepping stone for the rest of my year."
