How to have a fashionable face this summer, with our guide to hot new looks

If you feel like injecting a little more fun into your make-up routine this summer, there are plenty of bright shades and fresh textures to liven up your complexion. We asked The Body Shop make-up artist Chase Aston to take us through the key looks for summer 09, with recommendations for the perfect on-trend products to help create a fashionable face.

Bright, poppy colours

The big story is eyes and they’ll be grabbing attention with bold colours – aqua blue, cool mint, rich violet and peachy pinks. Try The Body Shop Hot Brights Eye Colour in Violet Sunset, £9.50, contains a rich violet and peachy beige; And Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Sand & Sea Eyeshadow Palette, £26, offers aqua blues and golds.

Clash, don’t complement

Whatever shade you choose in your eyeshadow, go for a constrasting tone with your eyeliner. And make sure it’s metallic and waterproof, to really stand out and last through the heat. Try Bourjois Contour Clubbing Waterproof metallic eyeliners, £4.30, come in vivid blue and green – the key colours.

Sheer, iridescent textures

Skin should almost sparkle, catching the light of the sun. So make sure products have hints of iridescence in them – even brows: use a slightly shimmery shadow to darken them without making them look flat and finish with a brow gel for extra shine. Try Revlon ColorStay 12-Hour Eyeshadow Quad, £7.82, in Neutral Khaki, which contains the perfect brown.

Sculpted cheekbones

Very Eighties. Apply blush powder across and up the cheekbones, instead of to the apples of the cheeks. And, again, go for shimmery textures that will look great in sunlight and make skin glow. Try Dior Cheek Colour Shimmer Powder in Diamond Pop, £28.50.

Muted lips

When eyes are so bright, you need to tone down the colour on lips. Sheer corals, soft pinks, honey bronzes and golds are perfect for the day. Try The Body Shop Hot Brights Lip & Cheek Stain in Coral Sand, £10, which is also waterproof. At night, add Estee Lauder Pure Color GlossSticks, £15, in Pop Pink or Orange Poppy on top, which suit all skin tones.

Go head to toe

For the finishing touch, Chase recommends continuing the contrasting colours theme through to hands and feet, too, with Jessica polish in King Tut’s Gem vivid blue on fingernails and My Cabana Boy coral orange, £8.95 each, on toe nails, which he says looks great with a fake tan.
