Golden Globes 2018: the meaning behind the stars’ most powerful beauty looks

The 75th annual Golden Globes was certainly one to remember, with countless Hollywood stars using the glamorous awards as a platform to promote the message of the #TIMESUP movement - the anti-sexual harassment campaign backed by the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Eva Longoria. While legions of actresses took to Instagram to pledge their support, the solidarity spread to the red carpet, too, where the majority of famous faces chose to wear black to highlight the cause.

But it wasn’t only the LBDs that made a statement as the stars arrived on Sunday night. Another unexpected trend emerged on the faces of the leading ladies, with many opting for bold make-up looks to further support the movement and portray their own personal messages. Emma Stone’s purple and green make-up look

Make-up artist to the stars Rachel Goodwin was inspired by the suffragettes in creating this look for Emma Stone, which incorporated greens and purples to symbolise female empowerment. “Purple as everyone knows is the royal colour. It stands for the royal blood that flows through the veins of every suffragette, the instinct for freedom and dignity. White stands for purity in private and public life… and green the colour of hope,” she posted on Instagram, quoting famous women’s rights activist Emmiline Pethick-Lawrence. Rachel used all NARS make-up to create the look.

Claire Foy’s bold red lips

The Crown’s Claire Foy joined many of her fellow actresses in choosing an androgynous black power suit to walk the red carpet. Finishing the look with slicked-back hair and a cherry red lip, the star made her statement loud and clear – with make-up artist Georgie Eisdell stating to People magazine that she had deliberately wanted to make the look impactful, using Chantecaille lipstick in Cerise.

Heidi Klum’s midnight manicure

Usually a fan of nude nails for her red carpet appearances, model Heidi Klum instead opted for shade-of-the-night black for her Golden Globes look – to match her striking Ashi Studio high-low gown. Nail guru Tom Bachik said of the look on Instagram: “Black Onyx by @opi_products - mani for Heidi Klum in honour of #whywewearblack #timesup”.

Lena Headey’s purple eyeshadow

Taking similar inspiration to that of Emma Stone’s look, Rachel Goodwin once again used NARS products to create Game of Thrones star Lena Headey’s purple smokey eye, which she teamed with a natural pink balmy lip. A few days prior to the awards night, Lena had posted on her Instagram: “2018. Hi. Yes time is up. UP. Voices Be Loud.”

Tracee Ellis Ross’ black turban and bold lip

Comedian and actress Tracee Ellis Ross, who chose to wear her black halterneck gown “as a celebration of our collective power as women, as an embodiment of sisterhood, solidarity and the work being done to create structural change”, opted to team her ensemble with a beautifully wrapped Marc Jacobs turban. Her makeup artist Fara Homidi applied Chanel’s Rouge Allure Velvet lipstick in No2 to finish the statement look.

Susan Sarandon’s fuchsia lipstick

Make-up artist Amy Nadine used Charlotte Tilbury products to create Susan Sarandon’s bright-pink lip look, which was chosen to stand out against her statement Saint Laurent suit and power ponytail. “Today I will wear black in solidarity and gratitude with all women in all industries, acknowledging our mutual power and vulnerability. #TimesUp on silence, on imbalance of power, on inaction,” Susan posted on Instagram before the big night.
