Kim Kardashian is going to great lengths to ensure she stays healthy and happy following the birth of son Saint. The new mum admitted she has had her newborn son's placenta freeze-dried into pills which she takes daily in a bid to prevent postpartum depression.

Writing on her official website, Kim explained: "So, I'm really not this holistic person or someone who would have ever considered eating my placenta. And when I say 'eat my placenta,' I mean having it freeze-dried and made into a pill form – not actually fry it like a steak and eat it (which some people do, BTW)."

The mum-of-two said that some of her friends had inspired her to give it a go after crediting the pills with stopping them from developing postpartum depression.

"I heard so many stories when I was pregnant with North of moms who never ate their placenta with their first baby and then had postpartum depression," Kim wrote. "But then when they took the pills with their second baby, they did not suffer from depression! So I thought, why not try it? What do I have to lose?"

The 35-year-old has also revealed that she has already lost 17 pounds since welcoming her son Saint on 5 December. Speaking to Caitlyn Jenner during a live video stream via her app, Kim said she is "feeling much better" since giving birth.

Kim gave birth to her baby boy at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and returned home with her bundle of joy two days later. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star's mum Kris Jenner has since said that Kim was "amazing" during the delivery.

"I mean, she's a really strong girl – a little cranky when she gets uncomfortable – but other than that, she's amazing," Kris told the press while attending a Women in Entertainment breakfast event organised by Hollywood Reporter. "She's doing great right now. I think she's happy that part of it is over and he's here."

Speaking about her new grandson, Kris said: "He's amazing. We've only known him for a few days so we'll see if he's calm, or you know, anxious. You know we'll see what kind of kid he is."
