Mission: a healthy glow, not shiny skin

In summer, oily skins are particularly prone to the effects of heat. These tips will help you combat the problem.


Most of us long for the summer to come, but when it's here it brings a number of problems, not least for those of us whose skin tends to be greasy.

The heat sends the sebaceous glands out of control,  the skin is oilier than usual and there's a tendency for more pimples and blemishes to appear. If you add in a humid atmosphere and increased perspiration, it can take the shine out of the pleasures of summer.

Don't despair! Check out these tricks to restore that healthy glow.


  • In summer, opt for lighter cosmetics, or apply your usual cream but only on the drier areas of the face such as the cheeks.
  • If shiny skin is a major problem, you may want to use a cream specifically for oily skin and if you are in a country with high humidity, you may not need to use your moisturiser.
  • The best way to cleanse your skin of impurities or excess grease is to use water-based cleansers designed specifically for oily skin.
  • Once a week it's a good idea to exfoliate or use acidic-based cosmetics, which prevent the accumulation of impurities in the pores and the appearance of unsightly blackheads.
  • If you want to hide the shine, use a translucent oil-free or oil-absorbing loose powder. Apply using a kabuki or buffer brush or powder puff and then remove excess powder with a large powder brush. A loose powder will absorb excess oil as it occurs throughout the day. A good additional product is a mattifying gel, a product that, like cream, is applied to the shiny areas and absorbs the oil without leaving any traces. These can be applied either to clean skin or on top of makeup, and are highly effective.
  • And when you need an occasional touch-up, use blotting tissues, small strips that are pressed gently onto the oily areas and literally mop up the oil, leaving skin looking fresh for at least two or three hours.
