Last year was undoubtedly the year of the sheet mask – with everyone from Victoria Beckham to Kim Kardashian keen to snap a selfie wearing theirs, as well as new innovations including dry formulas and metallic foil finishes.

But it looks like it’s time to pack away those paper-thin packets, as 2018’s answer to intensive skin treatments is decidedly different. That’s right, the latest texture to hit the mask market is jelly – sadly not for eating, though the application and results are certainly pleasing.

The benefits are in the typically hydrating, gelatinous base, which suspends the ingredients and gives a silky-smooth texture that is particularly light and gentle on the skin, as well as satisfying to slather. Cooling and moisturising at the same time, the gel consistency is ideal for dehydrated skins that don’t react well to heavy product. Read on to find out more about the beauty bandwagon that’s actually worth jumping on…

lush

Lush Cosmetics FOMO Jelly Face Mask, £6.95

The launch of Lush’s five-strong range of jelly treatments back in summer 2017 certainly created a buzz around the new texture – once pinched from the tub, the masks transform into a paste that can be applied to clean skin. FOMO is great for calming sensitive skin, with calamine and rose oil to soothe.

dior jelly mask

Dior Hydra Life Glow Better, £44.00

This glow-inducing mask is a luxurious treat that works as a peel and a scrub at the same time, with fruit extracts that resurface and apricot kernel particles to buff away dead skin. Perfect for polishing skin to leave a smooth base for make-up.

kiehls calendula aloe soothing hydration mask

Kiehl’s Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Masque, £43.50

Light and oil-free, this Kiehl’s offering is ideal for skin in need of hydration without heavy creams or serums. Use before bed for fresh, plumped skin – no oily residue needed.

garnier skinactive juicy mask

Garnier Skin Active Juicy Face Mask, £1.49

A budget option comes in Garnier’s glycolic acid-based mask, which is suspended with lemon extract in the gel formula for a softening effect. The thinner, almost honey-like texture doesn’t set or harden on the skin, like the others, making it easy and comfortable to wear.

Skin79

Skin79 Jeju Skin Glow Jelly Mask, £4.50

Since Asian skincare principles are the basis of most worldwide beauty trends, you can be sure you’re in good hands with Korean cosmetic brand Skin79’s jelly mask – which is made with canola honey to deep-clean pores. Ideal for tackling New Year breakouts, and boost hydration, too. Available from global beauty retailer Beauty Bay.
