BOYS AND GIRLS COME OUT TO PLAY IN DUBLIN

2 FEBRUARY 2007

Girl power and boyish charm were both in abundant supply when Ireland's hottest musical talents turned out for this year's Meteor Awards. Local boys Westlife and American sirens The Pussycat Dolls were greeted by deafening roars of approval when they emerged on the stage of Dublin's Point Theatre on Thursday night.

If there was any doubt about the Celtic foursome's popularity in their home country, it was firmly extinguished when they were named best Irish pop act for the seventh consecutive year. Kian Egan was accompanied to the bash by his girlfriend, Hollyoaks actress Jodi Albert, stunning in a shimmering low-cut Gucci number, while Shane took along his glamorous wife Georgina Ahern, who is expecting twins in June.

It was Northern Irish band Snow Patrol who made the biggest impression at the ceremony, however. The group, who are currently enjoying phenomenal success in the United States, were named winners in the best album, best song, best live performance and best Irish band categories. And their storming performance on the charts spells good news for Save The Children, as the generous musicians are donating ten per cent of the royalties from their album to the charity.

The Scissor Sisters and The Arctic Monkeys were likewise honoured for their latest discs, while Amy Winehouse and The Kaiser Chiefs both gave musical performances. Also on hand and notching up the evening's glamour factor was Miss Ireland Sarah Morrissey.
