Thousands see in 2009 with Alex as she steals the show at Elton's do

2 JANUARY 2009
When it comes to turning a new page in 2009, Alexandra Burke is already doing better than most of us. The X Factor winner welcomed the new year in A-list company, warming up an appreciative crowd at Elton John's televised countdown bash in London's 02 arena.

The evening kicked off with the North London songbird performing her chart-topping version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah backed by a full gospel choir.

As she sang the last note the 17,000-strong audience went wild. And such was the enthusiasm it was a few minutes before the veteran entertainer could begin his own set.

Sitting behind his famous red grand piano Elton sang Philadelphia Freedom and I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues. He was also joined on stage by Pop Idol winner Will Young for a duet of Daniel.

Later the Candle In The Wind singer played Auld Lang Syne as the clocks struck midnight and red balloons were released from the ceiling while a laser show got underway.
