Born in Buckinghamshire to Lt Colonel Ingram Murray and his wife Juliet Ritchie, Alastair James Hay Murray graduated with a degree in history from Oxford. There he also performed with elite comedy group, the Oxford Revue. His comic skills were recognised when he was nominated for an award at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in 1996, 1997 and 1998 a prize he finally took home in 1999. Starting out with an act involving impressions of everyday sounds, Al developed his most recognisable character, the pub landlord, in 1994 while supporting TV comedian Harry Hill. He went on to appear in the theatre show The Pub Landlord My Gaff, My Rules, which earned him an Olivier award nomination in 2002. The character transitioned to the small screen in various TV shows including Time Gentleman Please and Fact Hunt. In 2004 the funnyman appeared in Hell's Kitchen, but it was 2007's Al Murray's Happy Hour which really placed him on the UK TV map. On the relationship front Al has been married twice and now lives with his Australian second wife Amber with whom he has a daughter, Scarlett.
