Carefully shielding little Leonor's head from the sunshine, former newscaster Letizia answered questions about the birth with her customary aplomb, while the prince joked more than once that his daughter "sleeps all the time".

Admitting that a Caesarean is "uncomfortable", the princess looked as elegant as ever in one of her trademark trouser ensembles in beige with a cream trim and gold jewellery.

As the youngest of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia's seven grandchildren, Leonor can look forward to a lively festive season in the heart of a royal family renowned for its personal closeness and friendly public image.
