LETIZIA AND MAXIMA BOTH EXPECTING NEW ARRIVALS IN 2007

26 SEPTEMBER 2006

Spring 2007 looks set to be a time a celebration for Europe's leading royals, after two of the continent's most popular princesses announced they were expecting babies. Princess Letizia of Spain has confirmed she is expecting her second child with husband Crown Prince Felipe, while the Netherlands' enormously popular Princess Maxima is looking forward to the arrival of her third child with Crown Prince Willem-Alexander.

The Princess of Asturias, who gave birth to the couple's first child, the Infanta Leonor, on October 31 last year, will become a mum for the second time in early May. If the new arrival is a boy he will replace his older sibling as second-in-line to the throne. That situation may change if a planned amendment to the country's constitution, doing away with the preferential status of males in order of accession, gets the green light, however.

There will be no such uncertainty over the future of the Dutch royal household's newest member. "The birth of the third child of His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange and Her Royal Highness Princess Maxima is expected in the second half of April 2007," revealed an official palace statement. "The couple have said they are 'grateful and happy'."
