Christmas cheer has officially arrived at the White House.

There was excitement in the air as Michelle Obama and her daughters Malia and Sasha took delivery of the presidential residence's Christmas tree.

A brass band played O Christmas Tree as an enormous fir was brought to the north portico of the building by horse drawn carriage.

The trio inspected the 18-and-a-half foot tree, which will be displayed in the blue room throughout the holiday season.

But Mrs Obama confessed she still hadn't decided how she was going to decorate it yet.

A day after the special delivery, there was a family outing in store for the ladies. The mother-daughters team, dad Barack Obama and Michelle's mum Marian Robinson went to see a college basketball game.

The first family were there to support Michelle's brother Craig Robinson, the coach of Oregon State, who were playing George Washington University.
