Even preparations for the most modest of weddings can put a lot of pressure on a relationship. So when you're planning a grand royal wedding set to be seen by millions around the globe, there's surely an even greater risk of tensions.
And that seems to have been the case with Princess Madeleine and her fiancé Jonas Bergstrom, who are suffering a full-on pre-nuptial crisis if reports in the Swedish media are to be believed.
According to newspaper Expressen, the crisis has now reached such a point that the couple are no longer living together.
The rift reportedly has its roots in a big argument the pair had some time ago that has failed to resolve itself.
Now, close friends tell the paper, the princess has decided to stay either in the royal palace or with friends.
The couple announced their engagement last August after seven years together.
In the past, the media has described their relationship as "stormy", but rumours of a rupture have only been circulating since last month.
According to friends of the pair, the crisis is so serious that the relationship would have ended had it not been for their official engagement and the royal wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling on 19 June.
Jonas denied rumours of a crisis a few weeks ago to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
"There is no crisis. Madeleine and I are fine," he affirmed.
But what is certain is that the pair have not been seen together in public for some time, which has only helped fuel the rumours.
Only time will tell if they turn out to be true.
