The battle to become Britain's prime minister has been a closely fought contest, with the UK facing its first hung parliament for decades after Thursday's general election result meant no party won an overall majority. And the main contenders' wives are equally as matched - in the style stakes; all three upping their game sartorially speaking to step out with their husbands as voting began. No doubt a great deal of thought went into each of the outfits chosen by Sarah Brown, Samantha Cameron and Miriam Gonzalez Durantez for such a critical moment in their spouses' campaigns.

First up, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown's wife. To accompany her husband to the polling station, mother-of-two Sarah chose a chic ensemble that seemed to be loosely based on the colours of the Union Jack. A navy pencil skirt and baby blue v-neck top were brought together by a stylish white belt and set off by an on-trend chunky necklace.

The whole look was completed with a vibrant red jacket to represent the Labour Party. For Samantha Cameron, there was an extra factor to consider when it came to finding the perfect outfit – her baby bump. The 39-year-old hit the nail on the head with a sophisticated but simple ensemble comprising of a £450 purple wool smock accessorised with simple black heels and gold hoop earrings. Nick Clegg's wife Miriam paid homage to her Spanish roots with her bright silk patchwork dress, which came from the Barcelona-based label Desigual. In the absence of the warmer weather enjoyed in her homeland, the mum-of-three kept out the British chill with a long navy blue cardigan.
