Newly-single Princess Madeleine cancels appearances as sister Victoria steps in

Following Princess Madeleine's break-up with Jonas Bergstrom, her fiancé and beau of eight years, the Swedish royal headed to New York in late April to focus on work at the Queen's World Children Foundation, visiting organisations in New York and Florida on behalf of the charity.

A smiling Madeleine paid a visit to the Children's Harbor and Kristi House charities in Florida.

But the 27-year-old royal has now cancelled all official engagements prior to her sister's wedding on June 19, according to palace spokeswoman Nina Eldh.

"After all that has gone on, the Princess has chosen to refrain from all public appearances for some time," said Nina. "She needs personal time and peace and quiet."

Thankfully, older sister Crown Princess Victoria has stepped in, traveling to the US yesterday to take part in three days of events at Seattle's Sweden Week, which Madeleine was originally scheduled to attend.

The heartbroken princess is said to have found comfort in friends who live in New York.

The royal family has not revealed when Madeleine plans to return to life in Sweden.
