His wife is a former Olympic swimmer, but Prince Albert of Monaco seems to be the one with a special enthusiasm for the water – especially at Christmas.
There was no sign of Princess Charlene as the principality's leader took the plunge with Monaco residents for their annual festive swim.
Temperatures hovered around 10C – but Albert didn't look like he was feeling the cold as he ran out of the water in a pair of brightly coloured swimming shorts.
Charlene's absence at the yearly event – she took part in 2009 - will no doubt have royal watchers wondering if a happy announcement might be forthcoming.
Of course it could be that the new royal is still easing herself into royal life, and not making it her mission to attend every public event at Albert's side.
After her absence had been noted on a few occasions following her wedding she told the Daily Telegraph the reason was her desire for "a bit of a break".
She added: "I think like anyone I need time to adjust."
