With William away, caring Kate devotes Valentine's Day to duties

Her husband will be thousands of miles away on duty overseas, but the Duchess of Cambridge won't be be spending Valentine's Day alone.

Instead she will be touching the lives of others at a charity close to her heart.

On her second official solo engagement Kate will travel to Liverpool where she will visit the non-alcoholic Brink Bar - part of the Action on Addiction project.

On the day William left for the Falklands, Kate - who is patron of the charity - paid an under the radar visit to the Action on Addiction headquarters.

The private trip was not announced by St James’s Palace, as the Duchess wants to gain an in-depth understanding of the organisation's work before she carries out any public engagements.

“The Duchess will continue to use her time to get to know people at the charity,” said a spokesman. “You can’t learn everything there is to know in one day, you have to keep going back to gain an in-depth understanding.”

After meeting recovering addicts at the dry bar, Kate will spend the remainder of Valentine’s Day visiting Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

Brink donates half of all its profits to a treatment centre in the city which is run by the charity itself.
