Barack follows own advice to 'go big' on Valentine's Day

After reminding US men to spoil their other halves on the most romantic day of the year, Barack Obama followed his own advice.

The American president took Michelle out for a fancy dinner at posh Virginia restaurant Vermillion, where the Valentine's dinner costs $75 per person, minus the wine.

Delicacies on the menu included lobster tortelloni, beef with truffle jus and Passion fruit cheesecake.

Earlier, Mr Obama had made an important announcement.

"Let me start with a quick public service announcement for all the gentlemen out there," he said. "Today is Valentine's Day."

"Do not forget!" he told an Atlanta TV station. "I speak from experience here. It is important that you remember this. And go big - that's my advice.

"I'm going to take my wife out to dinner, and I would advise anyone watching to make sure they don't miss out."

The romantic premier also left a message on Twitter for his wife.

"Hey, @MichelleObama: Happy Valentine's Day," he wrote.

The update was signed "bo" – the name of the family's dog – indicating the president wrote it himself.
