Queen Beatrix volunteers to help overcome personal tragedy

With her son Johan Friso still in a coma following his tragic skiing accident , Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands bravely continues to fulfil her royal duties.

Heart warming images emerged of the monarch, sleeves rolled up, helping out at a dog shelter as part of a national volunteer drive.

During her visit, the Dutch monarch helped clean out kennels and look after dogs that are specially trained to become companions for disabled owners.

The annual volunteer day event is a regular fixture for the entire Dutch royal family.

Also taking part was Beatrix's daughter-in-law, Princess Maxima – who is married to her eldest son, Willem-Alexander

The Argentina-born royal volunteered at a girl scout group, where she helped paint, clean, and restore their clubhouse.

The House of Orange have put on a united front since Prince Friso – the second of Beatrix's three sons – was left fighting for his life after a skiing accident in February.

The 43-year-old was trapped under the snow for 15 minutes and his brain was starved of oxygen while rescuers frantically tried to locate him.

He has since been transferred to London’s Wellington hospital where he remains critical.
