Prince Albert celebrates his 55th birthday during visit to Palau

Prince Albert of Monaco turns 55 on 14 March – and celebrations should go down as some of the Monegasque royal's best.

Albert and his South African-born wife Princess Charlene will be spending the landmark birthday in the Republic of Palau.

The royals arrived on Monday to begin an official tour of the tiny island country, located in the western Pacific Ocean.

Images released show the casually-dressed couple at their most relaxed, wearing garland wreaths as they toured a local school and met young students.

Albert and Charlene have travelled to promote preservation and biodiversity in the area. The Monegasque leader is a passionate environmental activist, and his relationship with Palau began when President Johnson Toribiong travelled to Monaco in February 2012.

Away from official business, Albert will also find time to celebrate his birthday with his wife, who herself recently marked her 35th birthday.
